Police Harrasment?

February 1st, 2005 @ 5:00AM (19 years ago)

Yeah, I love these new initiatives that they've come up with. When I asked my sergeant if we were going to be supported with all the soon-to-be citizen complaints resulting from the new crime initiative...

Sergeant: "Well, I'll support you, but I can't make any promises about the administration"

Swell, that makes me feel reeeeeal confident.

I truly feel for the Sgt's on this dept with all the crap that is coming out from downtown with the new crimestat initiative. Sure didn't take him long to take over after Lt. Col Winstead-Wilfong got sick. Always new he was a backstabber. Just another good reason not to take the Sgt's test. But time will pass and this program will go down the toilet like the rest have. Maybe every now and then the people downtown ought to look at the crimestat reports and see the officers don't have time for all this CRAP you come up with. If I put a bad guy in jail today I've earned my keep, what did you do?? If I stepped on someones toes then move your foot.

Posting belittles the fact that harassment occasionally exists, although not as frequently as some (who are professional complainers) claim.

For example, I was this weekend with my wife on a Sunday drive. In a rural town we specifically drove the 35 mile per hour speed limit, even though the town no longer had enough activity to justify the lowering from 55 (this was on US 31W). I was still pulled over for "reckless driving," even though I definitely was not doing so (as I believe the on-board camera will show if they don't erase it before the trial). Unknown to me, however, my license was suspended (in 2004 I was pulled over for not paying the registration on time - I paid it that week, but did not know I was to show the receipt to the Hall of Justice - I mistakenly assumed that the computers would talk to each other) and I was put in handcuffs and driven to the county jail. (While driving to the jail, the officer, a Kentucky State Patrolman, went over 60 in a 55, and swerved a lot to avoid puddles - being without the opportunity to wear a seat-belt in the back seat made me worry for my safety - please keep your speed down when transporting prisoners, or else let them wear a safety belt).

At the jail, when they asked if I had any allergies, I told them I was allergic to onions (like some people with peanuts, it makes my throat constricted and causes mucus buildup, etc.). At meal time they gave me freshly cut onions on my meal. I asked them to take it away, reminding them that I told them I was allergic to them. They refused to do so and one of them even stuck out his tongue out at me. It wasn't until about an hour later, while I was trying to throw-up some phlegm so I wouldn't choke, that they removed the tray. The headaches it caused didn't completely go away until Tuesday.

So what do I do now? When I was released from prison I immediately contacted the Jefferson County Police Department non-emergency number, which put me in contact with the Hall of Justice, who told me to bring proof that I paid the vehicle registration, which I did. I had my license restored within 12 hours after being released.

I do wish to praise the Jefferson County Police switchboard people - they operated a lot more professional and helpful than that other county. The only area they could not help me was with my complaint against the other county - they said I had to get a complaint form from that county. I did call and ask for one, but I will be very surprised if they send it to me.

Please don't belittle the fact that some people are harassed by police, as I was. 99.99% of you are great, and you may never ever come in contact with that other 0.01%, as I unfortunately did. Again, any suggestions you have on dealing with this would be appreciated.
