A Tale of Two Stories...

December 14th, 2004 @ 12:41PM (19 years ago)

It is indeed sad that the media in this city see it as their job to "inform the public" from opinion rather than facts, ratings rather than truth. Well written RCFOP.

I agree, RCFOP points out the sad reality of our local media and their "blood in the water" response to Police events. I'm just glad the perp was not another "pillar of the community" whose "veterinary" career was cut short. My full support goes out to the Officers who performed their duties with the utmost of professionalism and saved that women's life, regardless of her alleged past.

Your organizations web site does the exact same thing "SPIN-DOCTORING" that you acuse the media of.

As an officer who has been involved in a shooting where the perp was killed i feel fortunate that the media didnt say anyhting bad about it. Sad that i am actually fortunate enough to hava a perp with a gun and not a knife. Like one is less dangerous then the other. Just remember that the most important thing is for you to go home at the end of the night. Worry about the other stuff later!

Very well put. I watched the channel 11 news that night and saw the news piece you are referring to. I, like many others im sure, did get the impression that the police officers involved probably over-reacted. I never watch channel 32 so was unable to see any other news story about the incident. To be quite honest i never thought there was much difference in the news stories only the reporters. I have come to your website for quite sometime now and have always been less than impressed with your newsletters, they are very one-sided, but i am very impressed with the thoughtfulness and video examples you made available. I can honestly say, "I see where you are coming from now". Keep up the good work.

Wow!

After viewing the two pieces I also would have assumed that the one was biased against thepolice and the other in favor of them. I have followed all the commentary here and I have found it very interesting. in fact this story has probably provoked a lot of thought in many circles because of the way it can be perceived.

I appreciate the reporter responding and the FOP guys because they both gave credible insite to the story.

I have to agree that the editor screwed up by not changing the story in a timely manner and that the reporter is not to blame for doing his job. I was also impressed with the fact that both sides took the time to make sure everyone knew the facts.

I wonder if WHAS would be willing to put an article on their website talking about why they left the original story up so long. I believe they call it a retraction. At least the police website was willing to explain their actions.

All in all it was a thought provoking story about how timing and how a story is told can be very powerful in the way that it is viewed.

Keep up the good work guys!

In response to Mr. Hyatt, I don't think it was the intentions of the FOP to paint on news station as bad and one as good. What was being pointed out, at least to me, was the fact the the news media in general sometimes jumps the gun when it comes to news stories involving the police. Every news channel has done it at some point in time it just happened to by Channel 11 this time. The media is where most people get their opinions on important stories especially ones involving the police. Therefore when the media jumps to conclusions the poeple watching the news will. I think the police just want to not be the bad ones all the time. People to realize that none of them wake going "i want to shoot someone today". Thay do what they have to do to keep our city safe and just want to be treated fairly by the media and teh public in genernal.
