Tasers Hit the Streets

December 3rd, 2004 @ 5:59PM (19 years ago)

I know it is a great tool and I like the way the Department issued them so that nobody can claim that they are being used only in one certain area over another. This should pre-disqualify any claims from coleman or any of his associates.

It will be very interesting to see the first few test cases in court. I honestly hope that we can capture some of it on video so that the public can see this great addition to our ability to handle aggresive and dangerous suspects.

For those of you that I'm sure will post about all the "what about the kid in Miami?" or "what about the people that have died from it?" I suggest that you realize that first off this is Louisville, Kentucky and we aren't responsible for anyone else but Louisville Metro Police. If we do it right then everyone goes home at night except the bad guy, and he gets a visit to the gray bar hotel instead of the hospital or the morgue.

Nice comment. Not many people realize that the FOP doesn't try to fix something if it isn't broken, but the thigs that are broken definitely need to be fixed. I am glad to see that there is some effort to work things our too.

Without being sarcastic, I would also like to point out that no Officer would have to use force if people OBEYED THE LAW, DIDN'T RESIST ARREST or DIDN'T ASSAULT the POLICE!

I also am glad that our Officers have been given one of the best proven tools to subdue violent offenders.

I personally can't wait to get mine and zap some scumbag. I think the sooner the word gets around about "riding the lightning" and what an excruciating experience it is , that hopefully, some of them will start behaving a little better.

I honestly believe that if the word passed thorugh the department about how it hurt and how it totaly imobilized you that the inarticualte members of our society wil spread it through the ghetto grapvine and maybe a few, not all of them will think twice about resisting arrest or fighting with an officer.

I would also like to say that I think this will be a very useful tool and that the Department made a good decision to get these.

I don't think it is right that only Sergeants & Officers are going to be required to carry them. I'm sorry, but if you wear the uniform from the newest rookie to the Chief everyone ought to have to carry all the same equipment.

The Chief and his staff should lead by example, not deliberately exclude themselves and the other office bunnies from wearing all the equipment the troops on the street have to carry. Tell me Chief, if you happen to get into a situation on the way home one night do you just plan on shooting someone with your glock because you chose not to carry the proper tools that you demanded your troops wear?????????????

Yes, they are a nice tool and long overdue. However, just like everything else, the department cooks have turned it into a soup sandwhich (that's a polite way of saying something not so nice).

After they got through with it, it is considerably larger than our service pistol, and YELLOW. They have managed to ensure that all the equipment we are required to carry is virtually unusable. If you can't manage the amount of equipment on your duty belt and use it quickly then it is of little use and a waste of your time to carry. Officers need to be comfortable with the equipment they carry or they won't use it. We are overloading the officers to the point they are impeded in doing the day to day activities required of them (at least in proactive policing); though I guess that's the underlying goal.

Did I mention that it's YELLOW?!

Let's color code the rest of our equipment while we're at it. We have Orange shotguns, and Yellow tasers. Let's petition for Purple pistols, Blue batons and Pink shirts to round out the ensemble.

Stay safe and good luck!!

I am one of the lucky 143 officers sporting the yellow taser. I have a 32 inch waste with the following on it now:

1. key holder

2. double magazine pouch

3. extra key stuffed in wasteband

4. glock

5. ASP

6. glove pouch

7. double cuff case

8. pepper spray

9. taser with two extra cartridges

10. radio

11. double ring flashlight/baton holder

12. and something else I ain't posting on the internet for tactical reasons

I trully have the batman utility belt now. Nevertheless, I think that I will like having a taser. But if they order me to carry one more friggin thing on my belt, I'm going to have to gain some weight first. Doughnuts anyone?

GOOD JOB ON SAYING NICE THINGS ABOUT THE CHIEF AND THE MAYOR FOR SPENDING THE MONEY FOR THE TAZERS.

DID YOU THINK ABOUT HOW LONG IT TOOK TO GET THEM AND HOW MANY PEOPLE HAD TO BE HURT OR KILLED BEFORE THEY ACTED.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE WORD " PROACTIVE " MEANS?

EVERYTHING THIS ADMINISTRATION DOES IS " REACTIVE " .

Hopefully the Tasers will be useful to the officers who have to have one more thing hanging on their belts. Now, if someone would just invent a weapon that could be pointed at the punks driving Boom Cars thru residential areas at all hours of the day and night. Something that would fry the amplifier and blow out the subwoofers.

That would be a tool worth having!!
