Courier-Journal's mistake twisted into police scrutiny

November 25th, 2004 @ 4:16AM (19 years ago)

what,s so funny??? I'll tell you whats funny,it's your apparent shock at an officer smiling. What would you like us to do..cry at every scene? How do you know what that officer was smiling about? Did you bother to ask? From the look of the picture, the female officer was talking to another officer approximately 15-20 ft away..Whats funny is that you've already retained the services of a lawyer to represent you...thats means 1 thing..your just looking to get paid

get a grip people!!..this guy was a thug..no more,no less. What exactly do these bleeding hearts think this guy was doing in the rear alley of a high dope zone at 2-3am in the morning? handing out some of the chief's surveys?? Check the guys record and you'll see what I mean. All this "hug a thug" mentality that keeps getting shoved down our throat is a "bunch of crap" . This guy was " in the game",so dont ********** about the rules when the "game" catches up with you.A wise man once said.."If you live by the sword, so by the sword shall ye die".....case closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....Capt. Ahab

What a joke. If I saw correctly from the clip wasnt 2x there with the family member? What do they want the police to do hold a memorial for the person right there.

Hey rw, this is part of your problem that you are not backing your officers. I didnt see anything from you or your office in regards to this statement from the family of this person. How about comming out and saying that the officers did nothing wrong. Telling the family that they have no idea what the officers were talking about or thinking about at that time. AND that the officers have to disassociate themselves with the scene or they will end up going crazy after seeing everything we see.

Hey rw, what are you going to do about this? Do what you normally do and start an investigation to hang your officers out to dry again?

The family of this murder victim, is upset because someone is smiling and not sharing their grief?

#1 I have been to many homicide scenes, and sometimes you have to force some humor or a smile just so you don't retch. There is nothig more shocking than seeing murder scenes in their entirety.

#2 Do you think that Officers have to scowl at murder scenes? Can't you get it through your head that we are people too? Does it matter to you that the officers may have been taking about something totaly unrelated to case? They might have been talking about U of K football, that will make anyone but a die hard Cat Fan laugh!

#3 If you were so traumatized by the photo why was the first thing you did was to get a lawyer and hold a press conference. Maybe you should have prayed for your Cousin's soul and that no other young black men fall into the same trap of drug dealing, and hangin' out in the hood. If that young man had gone to school or worked that day he wouldn't have been out with the other thugs at 3 in the morning to suffer his fate.

Instead of seeking payment why don't you seek guidance?

Why don't you help solve his murder instead of looking for some quick money?

Why don't you try and get young men off the streets so they aren' any more victims?

Why not? Because you're selfish intentions only want to grab what you can and blame everyone else for your problems.

Get a life!

What did I find funny about it? Nothing, but at the same time I didn't lose any sleep over another thug getting killed because he chose the thug lifestyle. Remember, nobody forced him to be out there in that place. He chose his own destiny. WHY CAN"T THE OFFICERS BE HUMAN BEINGS AND SMILE? Did it ever occur to anyone that they may have been discussing something totally irreverant to a horrible crime scene in order to not have to look at ANOTHER body of yet another THUG killed because there are not enough police officers out there to stop the killings?

Speaking of Courier-Journal Mistakes, how come there hasn't been any news stories about Jerry Abramson and the behind the scenes deal he cut with Titan Industry? You would think that if Martha Stewart can go to prison for a little insider trading that Jerry Abramson could also be looking at an all expense paid vacation at one of Kentucky's penal institutions!

There must be some Courier-Journal employees that think the public is a bunch of idiots if they expect us to believe that line about it being an oversight. They kniw exactly what it is they're publishing. Everything gets reviewed several times before it goes to print. I have no doubt that several people at CJ knew there was a dead body in the picture. What did the Editor-in-Chief know about the picture and when did he know it?

ok, I'll say it...DAMN RIGHT IT'S FUNNY! It's VERY funny whenever a THUG crack dealing SPONGE off of society gets whacked by another worthless social sponge!! Just another number to the police? Well, yes, but not how you're thinking. To us it's ONE more down, several more to go!!

I wonder who wrote the speech for the *********************** in the interview. You notice she keeps refering to it because she can't speak her own mind.(watch her eyes.) She probably went home to curl up with 2x and their crack pipe for a little down time until the lawyer calls for a court date. These idiots make me want to PUKE. To the lawyer representing the family maybe you'll be paid off in CRACK.

Nice. Real nice.

I was wondering when the lawyers and the talk of cash would come into play.

This is complete *******************. Guess what folks; the people that made the choice to protect and serve are human beings. How do you know what the officers were laughing about? Guess what? You don't.

Folks that work in Law Enforcement, from the police officer that patrols the streets, the evidence tech that works a crime scene, the detective that investigates cases, the examiner that handles evidence to the corrections officer that takes criminals into jail ... they are human beings and they have feelings.

One of the darker aspects of protecting and serving is seeing the horrible things that people do to one another. To handle situations like that, some folks use humor, some talk about basketball, and/or whatever else to do what needs to be done.

To say that the people smiling in that photo were laughing at the body is ridiculous at best.

As for the CJ saying they didn't know about the photo is bull. I have a relative that has been involved in journalism close to 15 years. I was speaking to him last night and he said while mistakes can and do occur, so many people look at every aspect of a page before it is sent to press. It is HIGHLY unlikely no one noticed a bloody body in the forefront of a picture.

The CJ printed it to stir controversy and stir they did.

The central figure in this photograhph smiling isn't even a police officer. He is a deputy coroner. Is he supposed to cry every time he goes to work? Sorry, but it is just part of our job.

The courier printed this entirely to stir contreversy. I can hear them in their little brainstorming, liberal meeting room. "Isn't it awful those mean old police laughing at that poor young african american that has been beaten down by the system and forced into a perpetual cycle of crime?"

"I know let's publish a photo showinfg their insensitivity so everyone can see exactly what we see!"

"Oh by the way, I threw another batch of letters away demanding to know why we haven't printed any stories about Jerry Abramson's OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT and MALFEASANCE OF OFFICE in the trash.""I hate the way those republicans seem to want to attack a beautiful person that has done so much to make our city a nicer place!" "Why can't they leave him alone?" "He wasn't doing anything illegal, his associations and his representing Titan industry while he wasn't mayor just goes to show you that big business and government can work together." "It doesn't matter to me that he gave away some old wharehouses to them, I'm sure they will be good stewards of his generosity"

I don't know why I delude myself into thinking one day I will open the paper and see the actual truth in the paper once in awhile. William Randolph Hearst would be very proud ot the Gannet Corporation. If it isn't true, sensationalize it so that they don't notice the difference, If it is an outright lie, tell it enough times and the ignorant masses will believe it. If it is the truth, then we will bury the story or not run it at all.

Actually, there's no legal reason a citizen can't initiate an AG investigation, and they can initiate it on their own. There's the question, with this question becoming public knowledge, why doesn't Stumbo open an investigation. I don't know all the facts, but what I do know sure sounds like there is a problem that deserves an investigation.

But, guys, really, what was he supposed to do while he was waiting to become mayor again - and what did his personal lawyers - who never tell him anything he wants to do is illegal - do while they were "ladies in waiting?" What sort of legal practice did they handle during those 4 years. (And how, when the statute specifically says that only the County Attorney represents the metro government - does he need not one but two "special counsel to the mayor?")

First learn how to spell if you are going to send a message "raciall"? Some people may think that you are ignorant until you open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Let's be real if you decide to be employed as a drug dealer then there are risks. You might get shot by another dealer, you might overdose, you may waste away due to abuse, you may go to the pen, you may try to kill a police officer and get shot in return. Those are decisions you make when you into that line of work.

We also know there are risks to our job but when one of us is killed do you see it on the national news as another police tragedy? No we are usually on page B6 of the Metro section! Bottom line...people expect us to take risks and protect them and in that we risk our lives. If you decide to be a thug then you risk your freedom and your life so do not expect us to feel anything more than you would feel for us!

Does anyone see a problem that a vast majority of homicide victims have prior mugshots?
