More Than A Simple Morale Issue

November 12th, 2004 @ 3:07PM (19 years ago)

Quit your ********. I don't see any answers being thrown out. It does not matter who is in charge, no one will ever be happy with how the department is being run. Police can't bust heads like the old days. And I don't see any body banging on the chief's door to ask the police to start kicking a** either. So what if the murder rate is up. You are still getting paid and a few more thugs are getting wacked. Life is good so deal with it. You still have health insurance, some one must be happy with that since your not getting a raise. This guy wont be in charge for ever. Kick back and enjoy the ride. Burn up they free city gas in that take home car. Enjoy your 4 day weekends (if your on midwatch) and all the other perks that come with the job.

Dear Chief,

You should be ashamed by your lack of leadership skills. You have surounded yourself with "yes chief" people. The biggest one is your "Chief of Staff". (what a name for someone that has never led officers". It made me sick to hear him on WHAS radio talking about the department. Get it straight Troy....are we down 80 or is it 60. You said both!

To our staff,

History will report that you have been the very worst staff either former department ever had. Some of you are smart enough to tell the Chief that his decentralization is not working. How many citizens will be killed before you wake up.

Citizens For Fair Treatment of Police needs volunteers for a liaison from every district and every platoon! Also, need someone from every specialized unit

We need people to deliver information to every officer on their platoon and relay messages about an upcoming event with political and community figures prepared to take action on several serious issues involving the police dept. I.E shortage, radio staff shortage, lack of respect & criminals running this city. As well as Christopher 2X being given the keys to the city and Veteran's Day being made Christopher 2X Day here in Louisville. Also, other issues concerning The Mayor and the general treatment of the officers.

Please contact Bridget Abell @ Bridget@supportpolice.com or support4police@aol.com 502-727-2544

This event will soon be announced and will be crucial for all officers to attend. Shall we call it a take back our Respect event... We will take back this city. We promise, you are in for big surprises. Since your mayor, police chief and fop president have not been there to stand up for you. We have found a few strong voices that will!!!

If the majority of FOP members don't take a more active role in the next election, then they have mostly themselves to blame when Chief White and Mayor Abramson continue to run this City for another 4 years. The FOP should attend and speak at every Council meeting, voicing these types of problems so that people will know what's going on. Crying in your beers at the FOP lodge isn't going to accomplish a damn thing.

Oh? so we have a president in our FOP, WHO KNEW???

I worked in cincinnati for 5 years, and that's a real FOP.

The president was the first one on the news the next morning when a CPD officer was involved in a critical incident.

Maybe we should all lateral there?

Just a note for those that read the forum that don't understand - they didn't "eliminate" two radio channels, they just decided to quit staffing them. They still own them.

So lets see. You want the chief to start to have meetings with his officers? I have seen him do this and that is not the problem. The problem is he will not listen to his officers. He is always right and will belittle the officer in the group that disagrees with him.

If the Metro Council members want to know what is going on they should go to the districts (oh I'm sorry, the divisions) and talk to the officers with no repercusions so they can get the truth and not just what rw and jerry want them to know.

I am on the street and working because this is my city also, but things are going down hill fast and if it doesn't stop soon we will be in a real world of hurt.

Something you failed to mention was the discipline issue. This chief is putting the thumbscrews to the rank and file while shielding his command staff. Hatmaker that was a great interview, I wish i could speak my mind openly but i guess i will just have to be satisfied with anonymous comments.

Perhaps this was the Chief's grand plan all along. Decentralize the department, dissolve the specialty units and let manpower get to a hideously low number. But wait, it gets even better. Then he realigned the districts so that the officers that are on the beat spend all of their time running from one end of the district to the other just trying to keep up with radio runs. Ok, so now we have a crime wave. And the great and powerful Oz is going to step in with his fabulous and wonderful solution, which by the way is to make the already weary beat guys work even harder to clean up the mess that he started in the first place. And he gets to blow some more smoke up the public's A** and make them think that he has done something wonderful to keep them safe. When is this community going to wake up and smell the cow manure.

The mayor and the chief can spout soundbytes all day about what merger and the realignment is doing to provide safety and better services to this community, but if anyone out there buys into it, then they are blind to the truth. Realignment has done nothing but diminished the quality of services this department provides and daily puts lives in danger. Runs are being held longer, offiers are having to drive dramatically farther to get to runs, run volume is up because the district geography increased exponentially, and the radio traffic on the channels is at an unsafe level. Officers are calling in by phone for backup because they can't get on the radio to call for help or even worse, the public has even called in for them when they've been fighting and can't get on the radio. And that's on a good day when the radios are even working.

And the worst part of all of this, is that we all knew this would happen. We told them it would happen. They just didn't listen, because they don't care. They don't care about us and they don't care about the citizens of this community.

What happened to the "Re-evaluation after 90 days" policy the chief preached when he first implemented these changes? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the de-centralization of Street Crimes, Gang and Metro Narcotics Units has done nothing to lower response times for calls for service, and has opened this city up to a rash of gang violence and open-air drug markets that are the DIRECT cause of the recent increase in murders. Of course, isn't that what we told RCW when he asked us what we thought at the mandatory meetings he made us attend to sell his policies? Don't take our word for it though, ask the defense attorneys. They've been asking where our "drug units" are? That their "wallets are getting killed" because they no longer have to defend drug dealers in court because they aren't getting locked up anymore. The 90 days has come and gone, and there has been no review. Chief, it's time to admit your mistakes and bring back these vital units.

In addition, the department has around 1000 officers now. This is the same number of officers we had before re-districting. No matter how you put it, 1000 officers policing one city is nothing more than that, 1000 officers policing one city. Re-districting didn't put more officers on the street, there's still only 1000 officers policing this city. Increase the actual numbers and quit playing games in the media.

Also, why do we have training directors doing next-to-nothing at $90,000+ a year. Take that money and hire another officer. Same goes for many of the other "cheaper" civilian positions you've created.

Wasn't the recent "Task Force", that did great work by locking up more than 1000 criminals in this city successful? You got on the news and talked about how great it was? If you ask me, that was nothing more than a temporary Street Crimes Unit, re-named to meet your agenda. By your own words in the media, the "Task Force" was a resounding success, so let's disband it as soon as it starts working (kinda reminds me of every other successful unit in this city). Where else has this happened? Try the successful Baker District Flex Platoon. You talked about how they were the "epitomy of Community-Oriented Policing" and that all other flex platoons should be modeled after them. Now the 12-man unit is down to six, another victim of re-districting. That's okay though, because you got your two minutes of positive media coverage.

Lastly, how about re-allocating our resources? Why do we have two sergeants (at $52K a year) checking to make sure we wear a tie to court (or supposed to be, I rarely see them after 9:30am)? That's two more officers that could be on the street. We have 30+ officers assigned to Community Relations. That's a nice, feel-good position, but it doesn't help solve crime. I care more about armed robbers, drug dealers, and murderers getting caught than I do officers teaching my kids how to brush their teeth in school. Leave the parenting up to me, and let the officers do the policing.

You talked on the news about accountability. Well, I am a citizen of this community and I am holding YOU accountable! Do something about the crime increase in Louisville, or take your ludicrous ideas elsewhere.

First, let me say, these are great articles and comments on your webpage. It lets everyone get their frustrations out, and brings up valid points. As a spouse of a police officer, I visit daily to read what is going on, and comment on occasion.

But it's not enough. It's not enough to assume the media, the mayor, the chief or anyone else will read your page and get upset.

It's time to get the message out. The FOP is a strong organization that has power, and a history of strong leadership. It's time for the current leadership to stand up, be strong, and be heard.

It's time to take a stand. The FOP needs to be assertive, bringing the issues addressed on this webpage to the public. Now that the Metro Council is starting to criticize the Mayor, this is the time to start showing just how poorly the department is being managed. A private corporation would have fired an executive this bad by now. A sports manager would have been sacked long before this.

The merger made Louisville the "16th largest city" in the country. The mayor and the chief insured we had the crime rate to match. If the FOP takes a stand, and shows the community what the mayor and the chief have done, then the FOP will have the power to help insure the much needed change.

Good luck to all of the police officers, and God bless you all.

I suggest all who want this investigation into the Chiefs ignorant leadership go to www.thelouisvillechannel.com and click on the story about the former officer commenting on the Chief. There is a link to rate the Chiefs performance. Let the truth be heard while people are listening. We must demand his immediate resignation, only this will bring peace and justice back to Louisville. And send a link to RCFOP.COM to everyone you know, especially civilians so the community can see what is really happening in the 16th largest city they are paying taxes for.

Do you people have a clue about what you are complaining about? You need to stop pointing fingers and start doing some police work.
