Oh give me a break, most have always been useless. We don't need 20 officers assigned to this unit when we have 125 vacant pos. on the dept. If we lose the grant than so be it. Let them hire secrurity guards and the teachers can parent like they have for 60 years.

One officer in this unit is one too many! It is a total waste of manpower & money. I thought the chief said if it did not require a badge & a gun someone other than an officer would be doing it. As far as I know the only job around here that requires a badge & a gun is LAW ENFORCEMENT. If these officers are not enforcing the law or investigating violations of the law then it stands to reason that they do not need a badge or gun. Applying the chief's logic to that would mean that someone other than these officers could be doing this job...case closed!!

Wow. It's a shame that we are so quick to judge our brothers and sisters simply because they are fulfilling a role different than ours. I'm quite certain that just like any other unit on our department, this one is made up of 90% of officers who work diligently at their assigned tasks, while the other 10% "coast". If I were in the Community Relations Unit, I'd be flattered to know that apparently several people think that YOU 20 folks are the answer to the department's manpower shortage. The role of policing has changed, whether we like it or not, and a Community Relations Unit is nothing new to police departments. The 20 people in this unit are not to blame for a department that has been mismanaged by the top leadership. The manpower shortage is a direct result of not hiring in a timely manner--nothing more, nothing less. The longer the administration continues to play with numbers so that things don't "look" bad--i.e. reducing our shortage number by 40 since we have 40 people in the Basic Academy--the longer the leadership continues to hurt our department and place ALL of our officers in jeopardy. Whether we hire or don't hire is out of my control; whether I allow the lack of leadership on this department to affect the way I treat my brother and sister officer is not. I refuse to allow the selfish grabs for power and political maneuvering by a handful of people to result in a divided department where we are fighting and bad-mouthing either 20 or 1200 good officers--regardless of how they are serving. If we must place blame, then place it squarely where it is due--not on the Community Relations Unit--but rather on the shoulders of those with the power to make decisions that affect the daily operations of the LMPD.

How about taking away the gun and badge from the Crappy Chief, that position sure doesnt need a badge and a gun....and put a POLICE OFFICER in that position!!!

This type of infighting is just what Jerry and Captain Canabis want us to do. The more divided we are, the easier it is for them to take our benifits and pay. If the chief is reading this, he will probably assign twenty more officers to the unit just to see us fight about it.

Come on, people! Stop falling for the same old tricks! This is what Jerry and Doug the Slug did last time. We have to stop the in fighting and present a united front.

I don't blame the officers on this unit for being there, most of them want this type of job. I blame the admin on creating the unit and taking the officers off the street. For using them during the summer to babysit kids on a sports field while our homicide rate kept going up and up.

If you look at the turnover rate for this unit, as young as it is, you will see that there are alot of problems with it.,

The Community Relations Unit has been a true blessing for our school system. The officers have made a tremendous difference in the lives of our students from the first day that they entered our buildings. With words like assault, theft, arson, sale of drugs, use of drugs, intimidation, harrassment, bomb threats, weapons, vulgarity, extortion, robbery, and striking staff written in our Code of Conduct book, it makes clear why we need school resource officers. All students should be able to attend schools where their learning environment is safe and secure. School resource officers allow teachers to teach and students to learn........it is that simple.

On a personal note, what has touched me the most in working with ALL officers, from NUMEROUS departments over the last 10 years is that they CARE. Their actions speak volumes. I could literally write pages on different situations where officers took the time to listen, respond, and react to what was "going on" .

In closing, I just wanted the message to be clear that we appreciate and value our officers who give their time and talent to serve and potect our community.

As Always, Cathy Blackburn , Resource Teacher, Safe and Drug-Free Schools

You really started your comments with logic...then began a tirade of ignorance that really makes me hope that you don't wear blue.

The same public that police protect also has an obligation to schools. If you want beat cops on the streets rather than making runs to schools (yes, crime occurs there too), then dedicating a few of them to schools with needs is not a bad thing. Do you have children in schools? If so, you want them to be safe first, educated second. Let's face it..we live in a city that has many evil people. If these people are school aged, they do not leave their evil at the schoolhouse door.

The use of officers in schools is not a new one. Many states require SRO's in all schools (North Carolina comes to mind) If your logic is that more officers on the street is the solution, dissolve all specialty units (get rid of mounted, SCUBA, SWAT, narcotics, vice, burgarly, etc) and make everyone a beat cop. Then see how much of your "work load" increases.

Your comments about hygeine, prom dates, and "No Crack Ho..." are insulting to both officers and to people who teach. Your problems with the mayor and the chief are because of PROBLEMS that have been brought on by your own. You can not defend the indefensible and you should spend more time getting your facts straight than acting like a bigoted a-hole. You're a public servant, act like one!

I agree we need to stop blaming one another for the problems in the Police Dept. The people babysitting the kids have found a job that they like and is safe. The real story is why do the JCSO people go back to work when shools out and our people find things to do instead of helping the overworked brothers and sisters. Like it or not we are a family and we need to start acting like it the BS of not supporting our family until it is to late is a joke. COL. John Aubrey hired 9 LMPD officers to replace his babysitters We the Largest Dept. in the state did not .

If you want to babysit it is ok, but our command should fill our openings with Police Officers instead of pretending that redistricting is the awnse. I believe it is just A COMMUNITY RELATIONS WORD FOR LAYOFF
