Those types of people don't know anything about being the real police. Gentry discarded their findings, since she actually did some police work on LPD way back when.

We all know the type who take the office jobs like in PSU. Did everything in their power to get moved out of patrol as soon as possible after being hired. Some have long resume of units they were in, but they never did much in those units. Did all their studying for promotion on duty. Sucked up to join the in-crowd or were born into a family of officers who they pale in comparison to but use their last name to their advantage.

When you see the inexperienced dork in the suit coming to question you, let your lawyer do the talking. They can only do you harm.

The question becomes were they laying down military style suppressive fire without seeing a target or were they firing at a target who had shot at an officer, but were missing? In a lawyer and college textbook world, police should only fire at targets they can hit, meaning they would have 100% accuracy. That's how it's ever worked in the real world. If you fired and prosecuted every officer who missed a target, you would eventually have no officers. Nobody wants to be thrown under the bus for making a mistake. The legal standards are defined in the law. Contriving unrealistic policies is exactly how America's cities went from low crime to extremely high crime in the years since they were put under consent decrees. The end result is way more black people people murdered than in the allegedly bad old days of racial profiling and hassling of innocent felons who never did nothing.

If the DOJ civil rights people have any questions about how that kind of shooting is handled in "role model" agencies, they can do a Google search on Lon Horiuchi and Vicki Weaver.

If being fired upon first and struck by a bullet is not enough justification to return gunfire, then what is? "De-escalation tactics", you can't be serious? That option was off the table as soon as that lowlife fired a gun at the officers. Everybody knows that it takes longer than a split second reaction to actually employ de-escalation tactics. Whoever made that finding and conclusion should follow his own opinion the next time he goes through the FTC shoot-house and see how well that works out for him. Much better to try out some absurd techniques while being shot at during a training exercise, rather than out on the street when it really matters most.
