We all seen the movies and TV shows about the FBI being who tracks down serial killers, bank robbers, and other violent criminals but their real job is to protect the power structure from all opponents. That's why police detectives catch all the serial killers and bank robbers and the military deals with nearly all the real terrorists instead of them. The FBI's primary reason for existence is jailing those who disagree with the political power structure or getting their informants to lead them into committing a crime. The rest of what they do are low priority things to fill their time in between those kinds of cases.
