Back in the "good old days" police could do pretty much anything they wanted and be found in the right. Even dangerous acts based on false allegations in warrant affidavits. Not anymore. Officers who want to survive for a career have to use a lot more common sense than the previous generations.

Why's that, you ask? One part of the answer is culture change and the legal and political climate. What makes no-knock warrants so dangerous today is that home invasions used to be virtually non-existent in Louisville. Now they happen all the time. Violent crime was a lot lower for most of the latter half of the 20th century. Now if they see someone busting in their door, they assume you're a criminal. Juries won't even convict them if they shoot you. It is beyond stupid to serve no-knocks anymore. All the cowboy cops need to saddle up and head back to the ranch, because they're not in Kansas anymore. The job pays less than driving a truck and there's no 20-year retirement. It's not worth sacrificing your life to get some atta-boy award. People will always take illegal drugs. It's not worth busting in a door for a dope case in 2020, assuming it ever was.

That was my thinking. Because of the guy's actions, Ms. Taylor lost her life. Why wasn't he charged with her murder? To appease the west end?
