Citing budget cuts, LMPD will no longer provide crossing guards to some Louisville schools

I agree wholeheartedly. The only problem is that all of the small cities (St. Matthews, Anchorage, Shively, and all the rest of them) are still part of Louisville Metro and their residents and businesses all pay Louisville Metro taxes just like everyone else.

Small cities like St. Matthews exist on tax dollars collected above and beyond what metro collects for LMPD's existence. Small city residents are paying for LMPD patrol too, but don't get any patrol in their city limits. They occasionally get major crimes or PIU to take a case there at most. They only do so because JCPD Adam District was a worthless inactive group its entire existence, no matter who the chief was or who worked there. The 7th and 8th divisions carry on their tradition today.

All this drama exists because the JCPS board, its president, Steve Conrad and Greg Fischer are incompetent fools. No competently run city anywhere has this question even come up. Police departments provide the protection, or else the school board has its own armed police force. There's no fixing stupid. The only people dumber than them are the JCPS graduates in the electorate responsible for them being where they are.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other comment mentioning Churchill Downs. LMPD is turned into a security guard service for a for-profit company every year for months. Officers are taken away from law enforcement duties to be security guards, including a lot of detectives and command. There's no better rationale for that bit of corporate welfare than for putting a crossing guard on the PUBLIC sidewalk and the PUBLIC street in front of the school to safeguard children walking home.

When you're so worried about whatever free sh-t Greg Fischer's giving you that you second guess the need to protect children, then you really need to take a hard look in the mirror at what you've become.
