"Within less than 18 hours, I asked to be interviewed again so that my initial answers would not be misleading." Translated, means he went home, thought about it, and realized he would be caught in the lie he told and figured he better fess up on his own. I wonder if he would be so generous with one of the minions under his command? Highly doubtful.
