The cost taxpayers bear to hold officers accountable |
RE: The cost taxpayers bear to hold officers accountable
It laid bare how unanswerable the people in power really are. Other states have somebody who comes in to figure out what happened. Here everyone involved tries to plaster over it like black mold in HQ.
The state sits on their hands because neither Bevin or Beshear want to lose any votes going after Fischer. People assume the FBI will fix it but they only have federal laws to enforce. They aren't going to fire the people who need firing or charge the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chief or command with state offenses. It also takes them 2 or 3 years to bring an indictment. Meanwhile unethical, lying as-h-les continue to rack up civil damages that metro taxpayers will have to pay because they're still in office.
The Metro Council's only good option here is to create a new Metro investigative office that doesn't answer to the Mayor except as a formality. They could take over the role of PSU and PIU for anyone above the rank of Lt and for all civilians. That job can never be done properly while answering to the Chief of Police. They can write it into law and inform FOP the contract will require officers to talk to them in investigations or be fired. The FOP is really toothless to stop them anyhow since nobody has the balls to picket. It would go a long way towards convincing the public that LMPD isn't covering things up, whether its use of force or molestation.
