Let's be perfectly honest about why the academy and PTO is so long. It's because some very simpleton government lawyers, the bottom of their law class making less than anyone they went to school with, think a higher number is better than a lower number. They think it makes you harder to sue because you have 26 and other departments have 24. Certain politicians assume that additional weeks of training will help officers not beat people up. Breaking news: thugs like Corder weren't the result of a short academy. They were the result of a bad hiring decision and people above him that were too cowardly to charge him with a crime or get him fired.

It's also because there is no shortage of "training experts" who either never did any real policing in their careers or else they're burned out and want to hide in a training unit. There are usually a couple good ones at most. Some of the worst officers I've ever met were in training roles or PTO.

Most of the additional training added in recent years is absolutely unnecessary. You could teach officers everything they need to go on the street in 12 weeks easy. PTO should end when THEY DEMONSTRATE THEY'RE ABLE TO GO SOLO, period. There should be no arbitrary number of weeks.

FTO vs PTO

It's ridiculous how LMPD re-invents the wheel. JCPD and LPD had the FTO program just like the rest of the country and did just fine. Now the PTO program is a joke. Look at how much down time they are at the station working on typing up stuff vs on the street picking up calls for service.

The bodies are piling up in the suburbs this year. People were already worried about that 20% increase in crime last year.

Mayor Bikelane should triple the community events and offer some gourmet coffee for coffee with a cop. There's no end to how tolerant his white suburban base is for west end homicides, but suburb crime is another matter entirely.

The PTO program is so fucking worthless anyway. They need to go back to a traditional FTO program with DOR's where people actually get evaluated.
