Aggressively going after violent offenders on both the streets and in the court rooms worked to drastically cut homicides in Boston, Cincinnati, and other cities.

Crime was a lot lower in Louisville and people were a lot safer back when LPD was operating in a similar manner.

The Captains who used to run detective units and patrol districts were able to use their best judgement in enforcing the law. The political Majors are too scared about losing their jobs, and instead appease the Chief's office who's appeases the Mayor's office who's appeasing the activists he thinks he needs to win re-election. We've also never had a Chief before who spent so much of his career off-line in administrative roles.

Brilliant post! Especially this:

But a paradigm shift back to the basics is needed. From straight-forward enforcement that promises offenders they WILL go to jail every single time it's warranted, to a correctional system that KEEPS offenders that NEED to remain locked-up, locked-up.

It's time people recognize that it isn't law enforcement's responsibility to try to fix all the ills of society. Their primary function is to enforce the laws, and hold accountable those who choose to violate those laws, period.

What's it going to take to make that a reality?
