If it were not for the efforts of a full time unit, solely devoted to combing through ileads and magically turning felony reports submitted by patrol officers into misdemeanors, crime would be up across the board. The use of KYOPS was offered to LMPD by the state for the low, low price of zero dollars but was politely turned down because they would not be able to alter a report once it was submitted by the reporting officer. Crime stats are all smoke and mirrors. If the chief's office could figure out a way to administratively turn a homicide into a misdemeanor, they would. Maybe they can just change the name to something that sounds less nefarious. How about "TBUT/Under, Life; Lost or Mislaid". Or perhaps, "Death by Simple Physical Contact". That might take the sting out of it at the next METRO Council meeting.
