Metro can save a lot of time hiring the same companies that the US government uses for backgrounds or hire some retired law enforcement as civilians to do that. LMPD is too short staffed to have sworn people doing nonessential tasks anymore. They can get most of them done in 4 weeks or less. Some with complicated backgrounds may take longer. Here's how I'd do it

--Written exam offered in combination with a POPS physical exam every month on a Saturday. Send emails to those who pass telling them where to go next.

--Written psychological exam and polygraph the following Saturday for those who pass

--Background checks begin for those who've passed everything

--4 weeks maximum to do a background check or defer them to the next class if necessary

--Command staff interviews with those who pass the initial database checks, before the in-person background check is done. This way the in-person background check could confirm what's said in the interview if necessary.

--Hiring decision made once in-person background checks are completed by 6 weeks after they took the written exam and POPS

--2 weeks left to obtain equipment and uniforms for the academy

--Ready to begin training 2 months after taking the POPS and written exam

Then, there's the issue of shortening the academy to 12 weeks and offering the other training on a part-time basis throughout their first year. They could start out taking reports and go from there as training permitted. Outside instructors can be hired to do practically any training the department is too short-staffed to do with officers.
