Only a subpoena is needed to obtain IP addresses. A warrant isn't required. Making a specific threat like he did is enough to get a subpoena. The person posting that may think he knows who he's speaking to, possibly because he's delusional. The only way to rule out a genuine threat would be to investigate that person.
