The food and drink industry has always employed felons of all colors, especially people into drugs. Some of these places are managed or owned by felons. A few are probably laundering money for drugs right now. I'd never take the gamble in uniform with a restaurant I didn't know for a fact was OK. Your best bet is going someplace where you can watch them make the food or a small place where you know the people well.
