It really comes down to both luck and skill. A good example of this would be the famous story of U.S. Army Sgt. Alvin York, during World War I. He singlehandedly took out an entire squad of Germans. They had rifles, stick grenades and a machine gun. York had only a .45 caliber pistol. It can be done.
