I never worked in Traffic, nor had the inclination to (wasn't a big fan of writing tickets), but I don't believe that specializing in traffic enforcement and possessing the expertise to work a fatal accident scene precludes one from being the "real" police.
Any officer can choose to conduct himself/herself professionally and proactively regardless of the unit they're assigned.
Next time a traffic officer is involved in a shootout on a motorist assist (it's happened before) and they react appropriately and survive, you go tell them they're not the "real" police...
