BRANDENBURG, KY (WAVE) – Police are warning Kentucky drivers after at least two cars were stopped by fake barricades placed in the road.

Police say it may be a crime many drivers least expect. That's because for a lot of people their normal reaction when they see something in the road is to get out of their vehicle and move it, especially if they are close to home. But police in Meade County say please don't, because you may become

Brandenburg Police Department Sergeant Ray Whited said a few nights ago a caller told police he saw a barricade near KY 933 and Long Branch Road and got out to move it.

"He was allegedly approached by three or four subjects," Whited said.

The driver had a gun and pulled it on the men who then ran away.

Roy Banks works security for nearby Doe Valley Lake.

“It's a private area and it's nice and secluded," he said of the area where the attempted robbery happened. "It's surprising down here in this area."

Surprising because Banks says Brandenburg Police, the Meade County Sheriff's Office and several security officers patrol the area.

Brandenburg police found out the barricades in the road were stolen from a downtown park.

Thursday night, Whited said it happened again in an area off Kentucky 228. This time, construction cones were used to block the roadway. A woman told police she got out and moved the cones, but quickly got back in the car feeling something was up.

Debris or construction materials blocking the road hits especially hard with Kentucky officers. Whited said, "I do know that it has heightened police officers awareness down here too, given the officer Jason Ellis incident."

Bardstown officer Jason Ellis was ambushed and gunned down in May 2014 while clearing debris from a ramp on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County.

Police say if a roadway is blocked do not get out. Lock your doors, turn around and call 911.
