Wrong. The clothing allowance is taxed on your W-2 as Salary. Therefore, you can deduct any uniform purchases you make IF they are over 2% of your adjusted gross income. The city, unfortunately, does not have a before tax accountable plan.

If you work off duty - you can deduct mileage to and from your house but you must have a log. You can also deduct uniforms if they were specifically bought (short uniforms, etc.) for off duty and you can deduct part of your cell phone bill if you can substantiate the business % use. Any off duty related costs can be deducted off of your Schedule C income and are not subject to a 2% reduction.

The equipment allowance is considered income and is taxed as such. The "Equipment Allowance" title is nothing more than just a name of the check.

There was an officer that sued the city when he was forced to retire and proved it in court and it is now considered a precedent.

Hopefully none of us will be forced to follow suit and have to use that.
