Conspicuous consumerism, it's called. People who are broke and have very little money will pull every resource they have, and devote all of it entirely to just one item... e.g. a luxury car, or an expensive pair of shoes. It's basically to show off and give the false illusion that they are successful or rich, because they actually are failures in most aspects of their lives.
