A little more than a day before his parole ended, Oberhansley was back inside a jail cell. Just before midnight July 21, Oberhansley led police on a "slow-speed pursuit" that lasted 40 minutes and ended in Louisville.

Indiana parole officers alerted Utah authorities immediately on July 23. But it was too late.

At some point, Clark County authorities became aware of his violent past.

Mull, the chief deputy prosecutor, said he requested a high bond for Oberhansley after the pursuit because he was on parole for manslaughter and out on bond on the strangulation charge.

Judge Weber set the bond at $25,000 full cash on July 30. But the next day, deputy Clark County prosecutor Benjamin Read, working without Mull's approval, negotiated a bond reduction with Oberhansley's attorney, Niles Driskell.

Driskell did not respond to calls. Read left the prosecutor's office before Blanton's murder.

The one-page, handwritten document they signed does not offer a reason for chopping the bond to $5,000, meaning just $500 cash was necessary for him to walk out of jail.

The bond was posted by Blanton, who would be dead within two months.
