LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- General Electric is exploring a sale of its Louisville-based appliances business, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.

The report, which cited unnamed "people familiar with the matter," said GE "is in talks with potential acquirers."

The company last tried to the sell appliance division in 2008 but scuttled the plans amid the economic recession.

About 6,000 people work at GE's Appliance Park in southeast Louisville, where refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers are made. GE has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in 1950s-era factory since 2009.

"We do not comment on rumor or speculation," said Kim Freeman, GE's Louisville-based spokeswoman, on Wednesday after the Bloomberg report was published.

When asked about the possible sale, Mayor Fischer said "We love GE and hope to see them continue to expand here -- but we are referring all questions regarding the rumor to GE officials."
