It pays to be nice to people if you can, especially the EDP. They aren't expecting it. Even though you have the power to be a jerk, it's not going to yield the same benefits as simply being nice. Rapport is everything if you deal with dangerous people on a regular basis. They will always have the ability to strike back at some point unless you send them away for life, but will rarely try if they think you're "OK for a cop". This is what they should be teaching before any officer gets to the street but it doesn't seem to be happening. There are people with 10 or 15 years on routinely being rude because they took **** from some scumbag and want to give it back to somebody. That's the wrong answer.
