I disagree about merger. I didn’t want it either, but looking back it was needed. Too much duplication of duties in government in general before merger. If we hadn’t merged Louisville would be like Detroit is now – bankrupt because they have no tax base. A bankrupt Louisville would have also devastated Jefferson County. Didn’t like it, but it was needed.

Jerry was horrible and still is as our Lt. Governor. But, he didn’t ruin the departments. I don’t think any Mayor really has the influence to “ruin” a police department. You could go to the most libtard city in the country and if the right sworn leadership is in place, they could have a great police department. I understand that’s easier said than done, but it’s possible.

KY’s pension plan for police was great and still could be if the legislators would keep their greedy paws off it. It was fully funded with surplus funds in 2003. Retired guys were getting 5% COLA’s. It only took ten years of stealing by the legislature to get where we are now. The new law is terrible – even worse than the “private sector retirement” police haters say we should have. We will still get people to apply, but you’re right, with a degree, average pay and a portable 401 pension no one will stay.

I always knew I wouldn’t get rich being the police, but I also knew that I would have good benefits while working and a damned good defined benefit pension when I retired. It was a good tradeoff. Not so anymore. I wouldn’t recommend law enforcement as a career anymore. It’s actually sad.
