Agreed. Fall/Spring qualifications aren't taken seriously by the department. We shoot 3 full magazines in the fall, and 3 half-full magazines in the spring, and about 6 shotgun shells per year.

I'm a little surprised that recruits don't receive some basic rifle training during the academy. I don't think that all officers should carry patrol rifles and for good reason, but just some training on the basic operation of different types of rifles (semi-auto, bolt action, lever action, and etc.) would be very useful in the event that officers recover rifles while on the street. It's pretty sad that some officers don't know how to render safe any type of rifle, either by unloading it or checking to make sure that it's not loaded in the first place.
