Thought nowadays is that it is situational combined with the dependance gene. If they are in a clean environment that is structured, they stay clean. They get out and go back to the same streets, friends, and family and they eventually start again because those around still do.

There are a lot of addicts who started hanging with a bad crowd, but come from wealthy families who gave them everything they ever needed. Look at all the addicts in the mostly white & well-off suburbs and neighboring counties.

The Hollywood elites on TV tend to get into drugs and some even die from an O.D. That is who the media hold up as role models for the youth of America. Drug addiction is very common in secular societies having expendable incomes like the U.S. Having money and good schools won't necessarily keep kids out of trouble if they aren't grounded in religion and have a well developed moral code resistant to the toxic pop culture of today. Letting the entertainment industry and the Internet teach your kid their belief system is the worst thing you could possibly do.
