Interesting story.. Louisville only has about 1.0 officers per 1000 residents. We actually only have about 650 in patrol....LMPD priorities are so off kilter.

"In fact, two-officer patrols could increase the potential for casualties in ambush situations" just like wearing your seatbelt is bad because you may drown if it goes into a lake. The reason cities don't have 2 officers per beat is they don't want to pay for it. Most officers think they would lose their take home cars so you rarely hear it proposed. Officers would be a lot safer though. You're reminded about how unimportant lower costs and take home cars are when you attend a funeral.

I wish I could take a survey about how officers really feel about coming to court. I wonder if the general consensus is officer don't mind it or do most officers prefer not being part of the court process? I know it depends on individual officers and other factors but I'm just trying to get a general feel. Do guys in patrol go to Circuit Court much?

Deputy Police Chief Yvette Gentry, who commands patrol services for the Louisville Metro Police Department. "Our goal is to provide a timely response and intervention when we are needed."

Lets try and get this straight. We are 100 or more officers short of required staffing levels, and have been for years. We ride one officer patrols. Yet, we are called in to the office and berated for low stats. Berated in actuality because we are short staffed and don't have time for writing tickets all day. According to Gentry we should be available for runs and have a timely response. Yet we are forced to stop people we normally wouldn't (taking away my discretion) and put them on paper for anything because of threat of punishment. I guess I have no discretion. I guess I would call this a quota.

Why isn't the media investigating these required "unwritten quotas?" This stupid stat game causes officers to needlessly stop citizens under threat of punishment. According to supervisors we can go out and write one headlight and expired registration tickets and "stay off the radar." I can't make this stuff up folks.

How can we be required to spend our patrols, as short staffed as we are, making needless traffic stops for "stats" and at the same time be required to provide a timely response when we are needed? Just quoting Gentry. This department is a joke.

"Around 10:30 a.m., law enforcement personnel swarmed Tyler Abshire's vehicle behind Doss High School at 7601 St. Andrews Church Road when JCPS received an anonymous tip that he allegedly had a gun inside a car. Doss and nearby Trunnell Elementary School were put on lockdown. Both schools resumed normal operations by noon.

Abshire, 18, is charged with unlawful possession of a handgun on school property." Wave3 http://www.wave3.com/story/23531892/teen-accused-of-bringing-gun-to-louisville-high-school-campus

KRS 527.070

"The provisions of this section prohibiting the unlawful possession of a weapon

school property shall not apply to:

An adult who possesses a firearm, if the firearm is contained within a vehicle operated by the adult and is not removed from the vehicle, except for a purpose permitted herein, or brandished by the adult, or by any other person acting with expressed or implied consent of the adult, while the vehicle is on school property;"

I hope there is other circumstances here! What law to he break?

okay several off duty officers working the Bardstown Road repaving project by the Watterson Expressway. 2 of the off Duty cars have a million blue lights on them and have a regular Kentucky license plate register to Joe Schmoe and the other one is FOP plate which means personal car both illegal with blue lights

Why do these dispatchers keep asking if you need another car whenever you call off on a self initiated stop? It is soooo annoying. I mean, if I needed another car don't you think I'd ask for one?

RANT:

Ok, so I'm working a detail. I am on post and I am there on time. During roll call we are told there are 4 people assigned on the detail who will be roaming and acting as a relief unit. The beef I have with this is these "relief units" will ride by every 30 minutes or longer and ask you if you need anything (hoping you say "no"). How about lifting your fat tush off that golf cart and tell me I am relieved for a break instead of whisking your golf cart from post to post having fun asking. I stood on a post for 6 hours and had a "relief unit" come by and ask if I need something. I asked to be relieved for a short restroom break. You should have seen the discontent in his face. Geez!
