Your street creds with the people you're locking up or talking to are defined by how you conduct yourself. They learn who not to take seriously, who they can intimidate, who they can lie to, and which officers they despise enough to harm if they get a chance. Some officers learn how to conduct themselves to be effective cops and some never do. Wearing a uniform is not an automatic ticket to being a good cop anymore than it's an invisible bullet-proof shield. Being on the department a long time doesn't make you a good officer. Being a veteran can reinforce bad habits and attitudes. The day you think you know it all because of your time on the department, you could find yourself in a world of hurt. You must learn every day and adapt your behavior to ensure survival on the street. If you think otherwise, quit or retire before someone gets hurt as a result.
