I don't really have a dog in this fight, but that would be the equivalent of someone riding around your beat looking for your car (I assume you're in patrol, or a creeper for driving by HQ so often), and stating that because they didn't happen to see it, that you're not working. There is a chance that you aren't. There's also a chance they just timed it right, and missed you. That you are actually following up on some type of investigation, and you just haven't been noticed by the one person looking for you.

There's also the possibility that the statement made by the CO was a generalization, meaning that the department is taking the recent uptick in murders seriously, and the detectives are covered up with new cases. I certainly hope people in your circle are more forgiving when you aren't the super cop, you obviously think you are.
