It has been safer for mainly two reasons. Officers from say the previous 20 years eventually made things safer for the officers who came after them because of their style of policing which basically was a rough style that made it clear that if you tried to hurt an officer you were going to get it twice as bad, so most bad guys knew that and the street way helped keep bad guys in check as far as assaulting the police. Techniques and trial and error that led to lessons learned from the older guys that were passed down also made a difference. From that you also got better training which focused on street survival. Better equipment like vests and portable radios have also had an impact on officer safety. Its still dangerous and always will be, and with the liberal mindset of courts and uninformed citizens it will not get better. The only real difference in policing is the difference in the computer age, people haven't changed at all. You young guys today, just think how well you would do with one in car radio and your own store bought flashlight and a revolver with speed loaders. Very different today.
