I won't list his name here, because he did do his time and pay his debt; but there was a former LPD officer who did about 3 or 4 years back in the late 90's for RSP over (and maybe some tax issues...not sure about that part).

He was offered a decent deal, misdemeanor and no time, but he opted for trial (foolishly), lost and was sentenced...so yeah, it does happen.

I'd like to think the reason it doesn't happen often is that there are few-and-far-between officers that f**k up so spectacularly as to warrant prison time, versus the "good old boy" system that you imply.

And by the way, before you even bring it up: the deal I mentioned for that former officer was a pretty run-of-the-mill deal that any Joe Citizen would have likely been offered if they, too, were a first offender and charged with a similar non-violent offense.

"...every cop I know who has ever been charged with a crime is either back on the force (after acquittal)..."

Funny how you bring that up. Isn't that how it should be? If a person (officer) is found not guilty, and hasn't violated departmental policy to the point of termination, shouldn't they retain their job?

By the way, that "acquittal" you mentioned would have only come at the hands of a jury of CITIZENS. It's not like the entire jury pool is comprised of officers or retired officers when a follow LEO is on trial.
