“that alone is a red flag to me that hardly anyone heard of this until it was shown to the members.”

Really? We weren’t supposed to hear ANY of the contract talks until the FOP brought it to us. This full time thing is no different. Metro government can’t negotiate with 1200 people at the same time. That’s why we have a committee that negotiates and then they bring it to us. It’s like car insurance dude. YOU may never use the FOP except for contract negotiations. But for those of us that have been involved in shootings or wrongly complained on, it’s well worth 3 hours of vacation time a year to know that I have representation, a lawyer, etc when I need it. You can get that back by playing with your crank for three hours one day instead of riding your beat.

Collective Bargaining Right

Collective Bargaining, that what we have when it comes to contract negotiations. The reason why at the end of it all, if we as a membership don't agree on an offer/contract, the city can give us pretty much what it feels we should get. BINDING ARBITRATION is what we don't have. If we go to arbitration and this third party comes p with a fair offer (regardless if it's good or bad for the membership) the city can in turn say " thank you, that seems to be fair but not thanks, this is what we are going to give them." and there's nothing binding city to accept the arbitrators offer. Sadly that is something that can not be changed at the local level. It's up to the House and Senate which will, I feel will never happen in the State of Kentucky.

Negotiations have to be made in Good Faith and if both parties feel that that is so, negotiations continue thus the last 2 1/2 years. Lawyers and committee members are put in place to negotiate. I can guarantee you that in the beginning started out with something like this, in however order you want: City: No raises (we are broke), eliminate this Cadillac insurance(off the table for good) and you pay more for the Metro plan. FOP: we want raises, same insurance for all members (future and current), more court pay and more uniform allowance.

The end result is the current offer. The 3 v-time hours is, I think a small/ fair trade off to having a full time President. Who will be working for us. The city will still be paying for him/ her wages and benefit. And at the end of his or her term, the department can and will stick them where it feels there needed (Latewatch in the 4th). Yea, no thank you. But that's the deal on that issue.

Be Safe!
