RE: Heroes of LMPD
Don’t be goofy. The FOP doesn’t run the city. If Metro decides it will provide security for its citizens or for VIP’s at private events at Metro’s expense, then that’s Metro’s issue. Personally, I consider it a waste of money. But that’s just me. Do you think because the FOP tells Metro that officers don’t want to do it that Metro will cease? Obviously not. It’s not illegal therefore Metro can decide to continue the practice if they choose. Why are you so bent about it? You work for Metro and during your 8 or 10 hour day you do whatever you are directed to do as long as it’s not illegal, immoral, etc. If they want you to stand on Main Street and write parking tickets – who cares? You get paid the same. The real argument should come from citizens who get less patrol and protection because of the detail, if that is the case. But is it? Are there fewer officers on the street or just more scheduled because of the detail? Lot’s to consider.

The event is being put on by a religious group that claims the proceeds will only defray their costs. The rest is going to charity. The city could provide a protection detail without much justification just because he's a prominent religious figure. The legality of uniformed police otherwise acting as event security depends on whether or not a public interest is being served, like bringing in a lot of tax revenue by hosting the event.
Everyone is entitled to question how tax dollars are being spent, even if you're a city employee. Whoever is on here telling people to keep their mouth shut about potential illegalities should read the Bill of Rights and the laws about obstruction of justice.
