I don't think he should have been fired, either. I honestly have more of an issue with who he was banging on duty than the fact that he broke a piece off a couple times while working. I know PLENTY of people, non LE & otherwise, who have done the same at some point at their job. Most of them were doing it with their own spouse/partner though LOL
