Each person has a talent for certain things. Some of us make great Beat Officers and some of us do best in specialized positions such as the positions that Betts and Gelhausen are in. There are so many other positions such as Homicide,K9, MCU,Flex, etc...why don't you show interest (if you desire) and try it and quit being so angry at those that don't stay beat officers (as I choose to do) for their whole career!

The Explorer program has mainly been run by officer's volunteer time in past years. Just recently an officer now has the time to use work time for this LMPD sponsored group. The Explorers are the ones that make sure your fed at events where LMPD will feed the officers. They also clean up your dirty messes at the end of an event. They collect, ice down and provide water for officers at details. They have been left on posts to run traffic by some officers. These kids volunteer numerous hours because they love and look up to the LMPD officers. Granted a few pieces of crap have made it through the cracks but the same holds true for the department. The Explorer post is an LMPD function. DO you really think that officer's should that work with them should volunteer for every Monday night meeting or for the the meetings where we plan the years events and trainings? Should officers always use their off time to be there for the kids on details, etc......There is one officer that volunteers his off days to train these kids for competitions. By the way, everyone loves this officer and NEVER says a word when he is detailed with the kids. He spends hours working with them to prepare them to make our department shine. Did you know that the competiton team won 4th in the Nation at the National finals last year out of 3000 Explorers. You get what you give. These kids give give give. If there are officer's that can afford to volunteer their time then great but if there are some that can do it while working then I am so happy for them and you should be too!
