Monitoring GPS data from the vehicles would have logical uses, such as locating an officer's vehicle in the case of a 10-30, or dispatching the closest unit(s) to a priority run. (Something that is already technically possible with the current radio system, if I'm not mistaken.)
The current contract prohibits "electronic monitoring" of officers, which includes the above examples. (Although I'm not sure if that original wording years ago envisioned the legitimate uses of "electronic monitoring" as technology evolves).
If inserted into a new (and subsequent) contracts, the language would have to be very specific as to what is allowed, and why (to avoid the "slippery slope" of officers being surreptitiously electronically-monitored in their conversations and other private matters).
