Actually the "folks" who brought down hostess were the exectuives who continued to allow themselves 10 to 15 percent raises and perks while expecting their union to accept 5 and 7 percent pay decreases.

I will quote a friend of mine; when a company fails, it is always the executive leadership and senior managements fault. On our depeartment (formerly the two) it was said if something goes wrong it is always the sergeant, Lieutenants and captains fault. That attitude kept many in command in check. After all the soldier-sailor-marine-police officer can only be as good as his or her direct command.

When was the last time you saw any command fall on their sword around here?

Lets see... here is our mission statement as quoted directly from the public website in it's entirety:

"It is the mission of the Louisville Metro Police Department to deliver professional, effective servises, fairly and ethically, to all people, in order to prevent crime, control crime, and enhance the overall quality of life for citizens and visitors. We will encourage and promote community involvement on all levels to achieve these ends."

Nope....nothing in there about "seek out" criminal activity. Lets see what the policy states pertaining to the duties of the patrol officers.

1.11.2 PATROL DIVISION STRUCTURE AND ASSIGNMENTS (KACP 17.5)

Uniformed Patrol Officer: Responsibilities include patrolling a designated beat within his/her assigned division and perform duties or tasks assigned by his/her designated commanding officers. The duties of uniformed patrol officers include, but are not limited to, the following:

Interacting with residents, business members and others on their beat to promote a cooperative relationship in order to reduce crime and resolve other quality of life issues.

Preventing and discovering crimes committed on their beat.

Arresting and assisting in the prosecution of, individuals involved in criminal activity.

Enforcing motor vehicle and parking regulations.

Investigating and completing reports involving motor vehicle accidents.

Conducting preliminary investigation and completing reports on criminal offenses.

Assisting division detectives and flex platoons, when requested.

Serving criminal warrants.

Performing any other activity as directed by the division commander.

Again...nothing there about "seek out" criminal activity. Sure, there are quite a few responsibilities lined out, but I pretty much cover each one of them routinely on a daily basis simply by answering and responding to a radio calls for service.

Then again, maybe I've missed something, but thats easy to do with 627 pages of policy and procedure. But I think you may have missed my point all together. I haven't seen or heard anyone call for or otherwise promote a "work stoppage" (your words I assume). But I strongly disagree with your stance that it would be prudent to suspend and/or fire anyone because thier level of productivity is not as impressive as your own. Make your runs and take care of business accordingly. All I'm saying is that jumping out on street corners and looking in peoples buttcrack for dope is just as reckless and irresponsible as spending your whole shift in your car watching DVD's in the bat cave. Do what you want but don't preach to me or anyone else with threats of termination because I'm not writing as many tickets for DTCD as you do.
