My response is meant to enlighten you and others who may not understand or who may have never been involved in a contract negotiation. It’s not meant to be sarcastic or nasty, so please don’t take it that way.

Metro is not just presenting one great big complete contract to the FOP that can be looked at for a week and then accepted because it is overly generous (unless Metro has seriously changed the way they operate). They negotiate article by article by article….and there are over 40 articles. Usually the first proposal by each side is not acceptable to the other side. Then they have to work/negotiate until they can reach common ground and agree on language/benefits, etc. Then they do it 39 more times. It takes awhile, especially if neither side is prepared to give up easily. What’s the hurry? I say keep what we have for now until something reasonable is hashed out. I’m sure Metro’s idea of a contract isn’t over appealing.

One.. I have ben part of contract talks with Louisville Gov. Two... I have also work for different cities and a new proposal was hashed on in about 3 weeks. Three... I have friends on Police& fire dept in several cities and they start talkes about 2-3 months before the contract expires and always have a new agreement before the old contract expires. Four..... You talk about 40 articles and raise and insurance etc.... but 90-95% of the language is the same contract after contract after contract... With only a minorrrrrrrrr number of changes every 4 years the crux is raise and insurance.... It should neverrrrrrrrrrrr have to take 15-24 months to work on an expired contract... PERIOD!

INDY PD PAY SCALE

2012 - Salary Schedule base pay

Probationary Officer - $39,446 (Pay begins at start of Academy)

2nd Year Patrol Officer - $47,651

3rd Year Patrol Officer - $59,191

Base pay for a 24 year plus year Louisville Metro Officer $55,577.60. A Louisville Officer will NEVER have a base pay that high. Indy makes more after 3 years...LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, if you make $50,000 in Louisville KY you must make at least this to be comparable in these cities.

Memphis = $44,603

Oklahoma City = $50,712

Sioux City = $50,771

Cincy = $50,830

San Antonio = $50,830

Columbus = $51,364

Omaha NE = $51,542

Tampa = 52,017

Indy - $53,262

Minneapolis = 62,100

Salt Lake City = $32,930

So again a Louisville officer wont make a base pay of 55 grand until being on 24 years. Where most of these cities make that in 2-6 years.... so if I am making 10-25 grand more a year for 18 more years I will gladly take that $180,000-$450,000 and pay more in insurance and almost the same cost of living. 2 of the cities listed I know have take home cars.....many have shift diff for both mids and nites.....almost all have college pay incentive for college degrees, bilingual pay... benefits are mostly equal or better in these cities.....
