Open carry/concealed carry at court has nothing to do with “showing citizens what we prefer they do”. Bringing a weapon into the courthouse (with the exception of sworn officers of the law/court) is prohibited, whether concealed or openly carried.

The issue is that individual judges get to decide if the police may carry in the judge’s specific courtroom, even if the officer is in uniform. Judges have been complaining to the court liaison and to headquarters that officers are walking around the courthouse with weapons hanging out in the open, often with no badge displayed. Judges are threatening to deny officers the ability to be armed at court if we don’t start taking care of this issue and concealing our weapons while in street clothes.

Please don’t run your trap and say that officers are expected to carry concealed at court in order to encourage citizens to do the same while out in public….that is total BS. We are expected to conceal our weapons because judges prefer it and because this isn’t the Wild, Wild West in 1850.
