A LMPD crossing guard was killed Friday morning in front of Carrithers Middle School on Billtown Road.

The accident that happened around 7 a.m.

The victim has been identified as 70-year-old Elaine Elgie. She had worked as a crossing guard since 2006.

Police said the speed limit in that area is 35 mph, but there is no word if caution lights were on at the time of the accident.

Elgie arrived for work 10 minutes early. She saw a student about to dart across Billtown Road, so she stepped in to help. Elgie didn't have time to put on her reflective vest or grab her stop sign. That's when she was hit.

Major Steve Griffin with the Jeffersontown Police said no charges or arrests have been made at this time.

Police say the driver of the pick up was headed to work. Police haven't found evidence of speeding or wrongdoing.

Barbara Harbsmeier with the Traffic Guard's Association says there have been two serious accidents in the past two years, including this one.

"Everybody I talked to said she was safe, she was careful, she knew what she was doing," says Harbsmeier. "You're risking your life every time you step in front of a car."

Visitation is set for Monday from 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. and 5:00- 9:00 p.m. at Pearson Funeral Home located at 149 Breckenridge Lane.

Her funeral is set for Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bartholomews.
