A state trooper and another person were killed during a shooting Thursday along a northern Indiana highway, state police said.

Trooper Dave Rich, 41, was killed, Slocum said. Rich, an 18-year veteran of the state police, was married with three children.

Rich is the son of retired Indiana State Trooper and former Miami County Sheriff Jack Rich and brother of current Indiana State Police Captain Bob Rich.

The person believed to have shot Rich also was killed, though Slocum said he could not immediately describe the circumstances. The name of that person was not immediately released.

The shooting prompted authorities to shut down the four-lane highway in both directions around the scene about 40 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.

Rich is the first state trooper killed in a line-of-duty shooting since Trooper Scott Patrick was fatally shot in December 2003 after he stopped to a check a vehicle parked on exit ramp along Interstate 80-94 in Gary. Darryl Jeter of Chicago was convicted of murder for Patrick's death and was sentenced last year to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
