Gov. Matt Bevin gave a show of force and support for an LMPD officer Tuesday night.

He awarded Officer Kyle Carroll the Kentucky Colonel honor for outstanding service to the community.

Carroll was shot in the chest earlier this month while chasing a suspect in the Russell neighborhood.

His bullet-proof vest stopped the bullet.

"Protecting those that protect us ... that's what we're going to do," Gov. Bevin said.

The recognition was part of a bill signing ceremony at the Fraternal Order of Police in Louisville.

Bevin signed House Bill 303 on Tuesday, committing $20 million toward Kentucky's police and firefighters over the next two years.
