The suspect in a high-speed chase Wednesday that began in Jeffersonville and ended in an apartment near Orell Road in southwestern Jefferson County has shot himself, according to Louisville Metro Police.

The suspect - a white male in his 40s - was transported to University Hospital, said Dwight Mitchell, an LMPD spokesman. Mitchell did not immediately know the man's condition.

Another person was in the apartment where the suspect was holed up, Mitchell said. That person was uninjured.

It's unclear what connection the suspect had with the other person in the apartment, Mitchell said.

Earlier, the Louisville Metro Police SWAT Team was dispatched to a southwestern Louisville neighborhood, near Orell Road and Autumn Lake Drive. Police blocked off East Orell Road at Mockingbird Lane.

Police had chased a black Nissan across the Kennedy Bridge, down Interstate 65 and the Gene Snyder Freeway.

The car was stolen, but police were able to find it using a GPS device in the car, Mitchell said.

Detective Todd Hollis, spokesman for Jeffersonville Police, said MetroSafe dispatchers told them a car reported stolen in Louisville was in the area about 10:30 a.m.

Jeffersonville officers tried to pull over the car at 10th and Main streets, but the driver disregarded officers so officers pursued the driver to the river until Louisville Metro Police took over the chase, Hollis said.
