A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy died Wednesday afternoon while on duty, after suffering an apparent heart attack at the Hall of Justice.

Deputy David Brown, 58, suffered cardiac arrest as an ambulance took him to Jewish Hospital, where he died just after noon, said Lt. Col. Carl Yates, spokesman for the sheriff's office.

Brown became a deputy in 1992 and worked security at the Hall of Justice, Yates said.

After returning from an appointment, Brown told colleagues that he was having pain and a feeling of tightness in his chest, Yates said. His commander called for the ambulance.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Brown is survived by a son and daughter, Yates said.

"It's quite a shock to everyone, because it happened so quickly," Yates said.
