A 22-year-old man who drew a gun on Louisville Metro Police narcotics detectives carrying out a search warrant Monday night in Shively was shot and wounded by officers.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to University Hospital in serious condition, said Vince Robison, LMPD deputy chief.

No officers were injured, but a woman who was in the Appleton Manor apartment where the shooting occurred also was taken to the hospital for what Robison described as an unrelated medical condition.

The shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. at the apartment complex, located in the 1800 block of Appleton Lane.

Robison said that when the team of detectives entered the apartment, the man drew a gun, pointed it at officers and refused orders to put it down. When the man advanced on the detectives, at least two of them fired, striking the man twice, Robinson said.

He said three people were in the apartment at the time, and detectives could see drugs and guns in plain view. He declined to say what kinds of drugs and guns were present.

All of the officers involved were with LMPD, Robison said. An earlier report said Shively police officers were involved.

As is routine in officer-involved shootings, the LMPD public integrity unit was called to the scene to investigate, and the officers who fired their weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave.
