Fischer said in a statement Friday that if elected he wants to retain White as chief.

"Chief White and his team have made Louisville one of America's safest large cities," Fischer said. "If the voters elect me in November, I will keep him as our top law enforcement officer."

Louisville Metro Police Chief Robert White has lost out on the same position with the Atlanta Police Department, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article posted on its website Thursday night.

Mayor Kasim Reed will recommend interim chief George Turner Friday morning to be the next chief of the department. The Atlanta City Council has to approve the decision, according to the online article.

Turner -- a 28-year Atlanta police veteran -- has been the department's interim chief since January, according to the newspaper's website.

White was one of three finalists for the job. Cecil Alexander, director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, was the other finalist, according to the online article.

White was also passed on for the same position at the Dallas Police Department in April. He has said that he is looking for another position because Mayor Jerry Abramson is not seeking re-election, which could mean he might be out of a job when the new mayor takes office after this year's election.

He was hired by Abramson in 2003 when the city and county police departments merged. Prior to coming to Louisville, he served four years as the police chief in Greensboro, N.C.
