LEGISLATIVE ALERT:S. 253, the "Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act"This week the Senate will consider S. 1805, the ?Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act." It is the intention of the Fraternal Order of Police to work with our key Senate allies to offer S. 253 as an amendment to this bill. The sponsor of S. 253, Senator Ben "Nighthorse" Campbell (R-CO) will offer the amendment on behalf of himself, Senator Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), Minority Whip.We do not know at this time when the amendment will be offered. The debate on the underlying legislation, which is strongly opposed by anti-gun members of the Senate, will be subject to numerous procedural votes and competing amendments. Nonetheless, we believe at this time that our amendment will be successful and consider the chances of passage for the underlying bill to be good. This is our chance to pass S. 253!!! The National Legislative Office will be sending out a LEGISLATIVE ALERT when the debate on S. 1805 begins and again when our amendment is offered.PLEASE BE PREPARED TO CONTACT YOUR SENATORS IN THEIR WASHINGTON, D.C. OFFICE AND ASK THEM TO VOTE IN FAVOR OF THE CAMPBELL-HATCH-LEAHY-REID AMENDMENT AND THEN IN FAVOR OF THE UNDERLYING BILL!!!
